I already own a tent. Does the planner still tell me to buy one?
Owning a requirement moves it; it does not delete it
Marking something as already owned does not strike it off the plan. The default ride's rules produce 20 requirement lines, and checking each one against the planner with that single item marked owned moves it to the plan's own owned list every time — never off the list outright, and never back onto the list of gaps.
20 of 20requirements that move to the owned list once marked owned, on the default ride — none return as a gap

The five that were never counted among the essential gaps
Five of the ride's 20 requirements already sat outside the count of 15 essential gaps before anything was marked owned, so marking them owned does not move that figure — it was never counting them. They still move to the plan's owned list the same as every other requirement:
- Groundsheet or footprint
- Stove and fuel
- Pot, lighter and something to eat with
- Water filter or purification
- A way of knowing where you are
What this cannot tell you
This is one ride — bikepacking, a weekend, wild camping, cold but not freezing, gravel and tracks, cooking, a rider who has done a few trips before — not every ride the planner can produce. A different set of answers could put a different 15 requirements into the essential-gap count, which changes which rows above drop a gap and which do not, though the move-to-owned mechanics shown here do not depend on that. It also says nothing about the condition, size or actual fit of whatever you already own, or about which approach the planner would otherwise have picked for that requirement — only that marking it owned takes it off the list of things still needed.
Every claim above, and how it is known
- DERIVEDThe default ride's rules produce 20 requirement lines.
- DERIVEDMarking any one of those 20 requirements owned moves it to the plan's owned list in every case checked.
- DERIVEDNone of the 20 requirements remain a gap once marked owned.
- DERIVEDBefore anything is marked owned, the default ride has 15 essential gaps.
- DERIVEDMarking a requirement owned drops the essential-gap count from 15 to 14 for 15 of the 20 requirements.
- DERIVEDThe other 5 of the 20 requirements leave the essential-gap count at 15 whether or not they are marked owned.
Other notes worked the same way
- What does expecting rain add to a bikepacking kit list?
A dry forecast takes dry-bags, a groundsheet and a rain jacket off the list
- What do I add to a bikepacking kit list for cold nights?
Cold nights add four lines at freezing, and the first step adds one
- I said bikepacking, not touring. Does that change what the planner tells me to carry?
Saying touring instead of bikepacking changes nothing on the list
