First aid kit

The things you carry hoping to bring them home unused.

What a plan says about it

The planner writes this from the ride you describe, so there is no version of it that is true for everybody. Here it is worked against one ride, named below, with a single answer changed at a time to show what moves.

2 nights · wild camping · cold but not freezing (8 °C) · gravel and tracks · towns daily

You said gravel and tracks, so the injury to plan for is a slow slide that grinds grit into a palm, a hip or a knee. It does not need to be a trauma kit, but it does have to deal with that. Get the grit out before anything goes over the top, because whatever is under the dressing stays there until you get home — and one dressing over the whole area holds where small plasters will not, on skin that will be sweaty for the rest of the ride. You said wild camping and cooking, so there is no tap between where you come off and where you sleep. Clean your hands before you touch any of it, and again before you handle food — it is the step people skip, and out there nothing makes up for it.

On that ride the planner marks it essential.

Change one answer

The same requirement, reasoned again from a different answer. One answer moves at a time, so what each one adds is attributable to it and to nothing else.

  • Surface · Tarmac

You said tarmac, so the injury to plan for is a slide that takes the skin off a palm, a hip or a knee.

  • Experience · This is my first

You said this is your first trip, so: rinse it out with your cleanest water, poured hard rather than wiped, because wiping grinds it in. That water comes out of what you were going to drink — you said around 40 km between water, and doing it properly is most of a bottle, which is a real trade rather than a free one. It is still the right way round, because an hour of being thirsty ends and grit left under a dressing does not.

Where to look

We hold measured dimensions for bags and for nothing else, so this hands the requirement to a search rather than picking something for you. Nothing on this page has a price, a weight or a maker attached to it, because none of those were measured.

A plain web search. We earn nothing from it.

Which one do I need?

That depends on the ride, and this page does not know it. The interview does, and it is the only thing here that can answer the question — no account, and every line it gives you names the answer that produced it.
